Retail Innovation Shout Out: A Wholesale Delivery Service without Membership Fees

Background image: Boxed

As I was standing in a long line at one of the two open registers (out of many) at a local store with my cart full of commodity, ‘drudgery-shopping’ items, I thought, "there must be a better way." Well, now there is. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Jared Yaman, Co-Founder and COO of Boxed. Boxed is a shopping app - particularly appealing to millennials - who can order wholesale club type merchandise, in bulk, with the touch of a thumb on their phones, and without a membership fee. Boxed ships free with a minimum order quantity, within a day to anywhere in the US.

The founders come with backgrounds in technology and gaming apps and saw a way to improve one of the more tedious shopping processes - shopping for and buying cleaning supplies, paper products and other necessities - by innovating with a new business model. By owning the end-to-end experience, Boxed leverages technology to satisfy their customers’ needs for ease of use, convenience and quality products. From their robotics-equipped fulfillment center and custom pick/pack/ship software, to their use of big data to curate an optimal selection of products along with suggestive selling and free sampling based on user preferences and purchases, Boxed is winning more converts daily.

To provide additional value to their clients and create more loyal, repeat shoppers, Boxed offers their Prince & Spring private brand complete with its own unique attributes and brand personality.

Innovation continues to transform many segments of traditional retailing and interestingly, many of these creative ideas are coming from those outside of conventional retail companies.
