Red Robin and Yammer Named SPIKE Award Winners for Social Product Innovation

Beachwood, OHIO - In recognition for their outstanding use of social technologies to drive innovation, Red Robin International, Inc. and Yammer today received the 2012 SPIKE Award. Sponsored by innovation consulting firm Kalypso, the SPIKE Awards recognize the best use of social strategies, processes and supporting technologies to improve innovation, product development and product management.

The SPIKE Awards celebrate forward-thinking innovators that use social product innovation techniques and tools across the product lifecycle including open innovation, crowd sourcing, expert identification, collaboration platforms, social product development and sentiment analysis. Social product innovation offers new ways to incorporate the voice of the customer and individual contributor, and collaborate on product development and innovation.

“Corporations around the globe are realizing the value of social products to improve their innovation process and harness the creative power of their internal and external constituents,” said Jenna Dudevoir, global vice president of marketing at Kalypso. “Red Robin’s use of Yammer for product rollout highlights the growing trend of transparency and collaboration, especially in the food and beverage space.”

This year, the SPIKE Awards recognize Red Robin for the company’s use of Yammer’s collaboration technology to deploy the casual dining chain’s latest innovative menu item, Red’s Tavern Double burger. This new gourmet burger platform was an important new product launch for Red Robin. Because of the sizable differences compared to the current product line, Red Robin knew that open communication between the restaurant team members and corporate was critical. With more than 2,000 restaurant managers communicating with more than 250 corporate employees, email alone would not suffice.

Red Robin turned to Yammer to develop a private network of collaboration tools that could serve as a place to ask questions, find answers and share ideas and feedback. The response was quite powerful and resulted in better collaboration, more constructive feedback, enhanced launch performance and greater visibility into guest satisfaction.

Red Robin has embraced the use of social technologies beyond product launch and product management. Because of the successful Yammer use during this deployment, Red Robin launched a contest for new style recipes among restaurant employees on Yammer, and the winning style is already in restaurants. Yammer improved the flow of information during a product launch and opened the door for seamless communication and collaboration between launches.
