Reinier Stomp - A Character With Character
...because interesting people are more fun to work with
I was born in a small town in the southern part of the Netherlands. During high school I stayed busy playing soccer and working at a bicycle company (how Dutch can one be?). I obtained a BS and MS from the University of Groningen in the northern part of the Netherlands. During this time, I was fortunate to travel to five continents (South America and Antarctica are still on my to-do list) which inspired me to choose a job where traveling was part of the routine. My favorite hobby is cooking, which I only get to do once or twice a week nowadays. Even though I consider myself a team player, the kitchen is a territory I rarely accept assistance - I want to be in total control of every dish I serve to friends. My Masters degree focused on strategy and innovation and was excellent preparation for my work at Kalypso (where I joined in the summer of 2011). Even though I once considered myself a bicycle and food specialist, I now mainly serve clients in the pharmaceutical industry. One of my odd skills is correctly estimating values of random items; whether it’s the IMDB score of a B-movie on a billboard we pass on the street or the weight of my lunch plate, I won’t allow myself more than a 5% error margin.
Who are your heroes in real life?
This might be the obvious answer, but I would definitely say my parents. I come from a family of five children – all of whom are characters with character as well. My parents did an amazing job raising all of us.
What historical figures do you most identify with?
James Cook. There are always new parts of the world to discover.
What natural gift would you most like to possess?
Teleportation would be a very convenient way to reduce the travel time between home and a client site (and escape the dark and cold Northern European winters).
If you were a writing utensil, which utensil would you be and why?
Writing has never been my cup of tea - I have always been more of a typing guy so let’s go with my notebook. It’s robust and hardworking when needed, yet flexible enough to add some music to my life as well.
When was a time you were scared out of your mind?
Last year when I was snorkeling in the Coral Sea in Australia, a group of jellyfish popped up a few feet away from me while I wasn't wearing a sting suit (as it wasn't supposed to be the “jellyfish season”). I swam back to the boat faster than I’ve ever swam before.
