Jason Milo - A Character With Character

...because interesting people are more fun to work with

by Reagan Pugh on September 7th, 2012

I am an audio geek. I love listening, playing, recording, mixing and mastering music of all kinds. My living room has speakers that weigh close to 200 pounds and are over six feet tall. My wife isn’t the biggest fan of the monoliths, but she lets me have them because she knows how much I love my speakers (I call them my other children). I also have a recording studio loaded with equipment for making electronic music. I’ve sold my tracks online (well, someone donated five dollars for the download, so I can call myself a professional musician), and my music has been downloaded by people on every continent except for Antarctica. I’ve had one of my songs played at a club in Chicago at a punk /industrial club called Exit on their “Bondage a Go-Go Night” and the crowd loved it. I had no idea that my music would be a hit with that demographic, but I’m happy to have fans of any kind even if they like wearing lots of studded leather.

Your favorite occupation?

A mastering engineer – they are the last person to touch a music release before it gets manufactured (CD, records, etc.) or put on the web.  The most successful mastering engineers have rooms dedicated to listening to music with the best gear money can buy and perform final tweaks on the most complicated pieces of music.  I love the idea of taking others’ work and perfecting the way it sounds.

To what faults do you feel most indulgent?

I love Arby’s roast beef sandwiches with Arby’s sauce. For my birthday dinner, I always ask to go to Arby’s because they can’t say no to my request. You could put Arby’s sauce on a shoe and it would be delicious.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Before I was married I had a dream in which I woke up from a nap next to a woman who must have been my wife and I was in a house on the beach with windows where the sun was setting with a beautiful orange tinted sky. I looked out of the window and saw children digging in the sand and I knew they were my children - in the dream I was completely content. I always thought I was dreaming about living on the west coast in California, but it turns out I may have been dreaming about the west coast of Florida.  I have been trying to make the dream happen, and I think I have done pretty well;  I live less than a mile from the beach and fish whenever possible, I am happily married to my incredible wife, have an awesome daughter and I feel like I’m living a dream every day of my life.

If you were a toy from your childhood, which toy would you be and why?

Legos. I could be anything from a spaceship to a castle and I wouldn’t be pinned down to a single toy; variety is the spice of life. I could also be fixed easily if I was broken.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

I’ve had many embarrassing moments in my life, but none I can share without creating a new most embarrassing moment.
