Cortney Behrends - A Character With Character
...because interesting people are more fun to work with
I’m a small town country girl born and raised Fredericksburg, Texas. I love the Hill Country and enjoy going back to play on the ranch and hang out with my family as much as possible. I went to Texas State University and moved to San Antonio soon after to become a “big girl.” I do believe I’ve grown up a little, but certainly bring out my inner child quite often - I still love playing dress up and dancing around like a fool with my friends. I have always been very interested in sports; I ran cross country, track, played volleyball, and was a cheerleader in high school and try to stay pretty active to this day. I am very energetic and enjoy spending time outdoors - sun, music, dancing and water make me happy. Summer time is my favorite and I love to spend every minute of it in the sun, floating the river and being out on the lake with my friends and family. I don’t really watch much television, but I must say I am a sucker for “Man vs. Food” and “Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives” on the Food Network. I love cooking with my mom because she is an amazing cook and never completely follows recipes. She always adds her own touch to everything and says to “cook with your heart and taste buds.” I blame her and the Food Network for my interesting cooking style of just throwing random things together to make something great.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My grandpa! He taught me so much about life and hard work. He worked for everything he has and taught me to do the same. He used to take me out to the ranch and put me to work along with all the boys, feeding the cows and what not. Because of him, I have learned to appreciate all that I have.
What natural gift would you most like to possess? Why?
Definitely fearlessness! I am not going to lie, I am a bit of a “scaredy cat” - I don’t like scary movies and I’m afraid of heights. There are so many exciting things I would love to do, but fear and over-thinking gets in the way. The idea of doing anything and everything I want without a worry in the world would make for quite a thrilling life.
Where would you like to live? Why?
Warm weather and sun makes me happy, so anywhere I live must be warm and near lots of water. If I could live anywhere in the world, I think I would give Australia a shot; the active and adventurous lifestyle suits my personality very well. I believe this would be the perfect place to fulfill my childhood dream of being a professional surfer, despite the fact that I’ve never even been surfing. I have always been very intrigued by the amazing wildlife there. Maybe this is because as a child I loved koala bears and thought kangaroos were just the coolest because they carried babies around in their magic pouch. Picking up on the Australian accent wouldn’t be bad either because it’s awesome!
If you were a country song, which song would you be and why?
If I were a country song I would be “Life’s a Dance” by John Michael Montgomery.
The chorus goes:
Life's a dance you learn as you go
Sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow
Don't worry about what you don't know
Life's a dance you learn as you go
I love dancing and it is always a learning experience for me. My grandpa taught me and I started out dancing on his feet. Now I am a dancing all over the place. It’s much like life, you don’t know everything right away or do everything perfect the first time. It’s all a learning process.
What is your favorite memory?
It’s hard for me to zero in on one great memory because I’ve had so many of them. I would have to say my favorite memories are of my family’s yearly beach trip. On these trips I have all of my favorite things in one place: my crazy fun family, sun, water, waves, and (now) margaritas in my hand. Every time I think of the beach I still get the same anxious feeling I got as a child.
